Tour of the Galata District
In this guided tour of Galata, we'll discover this neighborhood in the European part of Istanbul, which was separated from ancient Constantinople by the Golden Horn.
Tour of the Galata District
After meeting at the indicated time at Taksim Square, we'll start this walking tour of the Galata district, a new area of Istanbul with many attractions and highlights!
We'll start by walking through the busy streets of Istanbul towards the Galata neighborhood, specifically along Istiklal Caddesi or Independence Avenue. Did you know that in the past this road was known as the Grand Rue de Pera? It was home to Genoese and Venetian merchants in Byzantine times.
Next, we'll head towards the quintessential symbol of the neighborhood, the Galata Tower. We'll explore this medieval monument and enjoy one of the best views of Istanbul! Believed to be one of the oldest towers in the world, the landmark was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2013.
The tour will then pass by the Camondo Stairs, an art deco-style pedestrian staircase that is striking for its ribbon-like design. Here, you can take some pictures before we head to the SALT Galata art gallery. This building, which used to be a bank, is now a gallery where numerous contemporary art pieces are exhibited. We'll also get to taste some delicious Turkish coffee here.
Then, we'll cross the famous Galata Bridge. This iconic viaduct spanning the Golden Horn is one of the highlights of the Galata neighborhood. In fact, it appears in Turkish literature, poems, plays, and novels – you'll fall in love with the views from this place!
Our last stop before the end of the tour will be at the Spice Bazaar, also called the Egyptian Bazaar, where the tour will end after 4 and a half hours.
